Vanessa Palmer is a Native New Mexican and loves New Mexican’s rich culture of food, languages, spirituality, creativity, and topography. Vanessa has over 14 years of experience working with children, youth and families. Vanessa joined the clinical team at Odyssey Counseling in February 2021. She received a Master’s in Social Work, May 2019 from New Mexico State University as a candidate in the advanced standing graduate program and top 5% of the graduating class. Previously, she received a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, May 2018 from New Mexico Highlands University. During her academia, she successfully maintained a 4.0 GPA and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Vanessa worked diligently through her college studies to ensure the knowledge she achieved reinforces her morals, values, and professional experiences in her daily life as well as with the children and families she served. Vanessa’s perception is that social work is a way of life not just a profession which she adheres to daily.
Vanessa has over 10 years of experience working for an elementary school with Albuquerque Public Schools as a Kindergarten Educator, Special Education/Inclusion Educator, Redirector, and Title I Reading Interventionist. Following her professional experience with APS, she pursued a career as a Registered Behavioral Technician in which she provided in home therapy for children with autism. As she began her education and passion for social work, she was employed and served the population without homes at the Albuquerque Center for Hope and Recovery as a Pathway Navigator, Peer Support Counselor (facilitating groups), and Job Developer. Vanessa’s goal as a graduate student and as a Licensed Master of Social Work was to serve high risk children, biological parents, relatives and foster parents at Children, Youth and Families Department as an In-Home Services Practitioner and Placement Supervisor. Vanessa accomplished her goal and advocated in supporting children and families at CYFD for three years. Vanessa enjoyed her professional ventures but felt compelled to explore her next journey in serving the communities of Albuquerque, New Mexico in a more therapeutic environment.
Vanessa has excelled working with clients and environments that foster multi-faceted frameworks. Vanessa is eager to work with children, youth and families in creating positive change that require support, education, and empowerment in a therapeutic setting. Vanessa will practice the social work mission, use her educational knowledge, previous and current professional experiences to enhance the well-being of various communities within Albuquerque, New Mexico as a therapist of Odyssey Counseling.
